Faith & Family

MegaMind Media is a Black-owned, full service, Film & TV production company based in the Maryland/Washington D.C. (DMV) area, with production arms in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami. Founded by award-winning book publisher and producer, Tressa Azarel Smallwood, and her brother-in-law, business guru Donte Lee, MegaMind Media’s core values are: Family & Faith. The company specializes in book-to-film adaptations, feature films, and original television series and programming.

2001-2015

Smallwood, a former middle school teacher, wrote a now bestselling novel in 2001. Armed only with faith in her ability to drive better book sales, Smallwood turned to “family first” for financial support, and then launched a now multi-million-dollar publishing company, Life Changing Books (LCB).

By 2015 Smallwood was responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of writers. Today, the LCB library consists of over 162 titles with the majority either adapted to script form already or are currently in the development phase.

2016-2019

In 2016, Smallwood and her brother-in-law Donte Lee self- financed and produced the first book-to-film project (Secrets) under the MegaMind Media banner followed by All In, which received the BET “Audience Award” for Best Narrative Feature Film from the American Black Film Festival.

2020

To date MegaMind Media has produced over 30 projects by both collaborating with and licensing content to networks such as but not limited to BET Networks, AMC Networks, All Blk, Tubi Originals TV, TV ONE, BET Plus, Pluto and more.

2020 was a breakout year where MegaMind was able to thrive during the pandemic by creating jobs and projects like Holiday Heartbreak (Michael Colyar, Kountry Wayne, AJ Johnson, Lisa Raye) and a holiday favorite to all A Rich Christmas (Bill Bellamy, Brandee Evans).

2021-2023

MegaMind Media is an established safe space for creatives that provides opportunities to up-and-coming filmmakers, aspiring writers and industry veterans. In 2021 BETHer Partnered with MegaMind Media to produce a powerful and important short film series The Waiting Room and The Couch a breast cancer and mental health awareness series. Directed by prominent African American female veterans in Hollywood, Kim Fields, Victoria Rowell, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Vivica A. Fox, Yvette Nicole Brown, Tichina Arnold, Meagan Good, Naturi Naughton, LisaRaye McCoy, and Ta'Rohona Jones, this series is indeed a labor of love.

2024

In 2023, A Rich Christmas earned MegaMind Media its first awards' nomination for Best Original Movie or Special from NAMIC. That same year, the “MegaMind Way” continued to prove successful when the company teamed with Vivica A. Fox, producing her directorial feature film debut, First Lady Of BMF: The Tonesa Welch Story, which earned MegaMind Media two NAACP Image Awards’ nominations for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Directing in a Television Movie.

Equally important is the return of "Wicked City" to AMC ALLBLK for a third season. Written and produced by an all-female team of creatives, cultivated from within the Megamind family, “Wicked City” underscores the importance of black female representation on and off screen.
